Designing Diplomacy — Brand Identity for the Malaysia–Vietnam 50th Anniversary (1973–2023)

Some projects carry more weight than a brief. This was one of them.

In 2023, I had the privilege of leading the creative direction and branding for the official celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Malaysia–Vietnam Diplomatic Relations — a milestone marking half a century of bilateral ties, cultural exchange, and enduring partnership between two nations.

The Brief

The challenge was to create a cohesive diplomatic identity that felt both ceremonial and contemporary — one that could honour the gravity of the occasion while resonating across vastly different cultural visual languages. The work needed to live comfortably in a formal embassy setting and translate equally well across stage backdrops, LED environments, printed invitations, exhibition spaces, and digital platforms.

Creative Direction

The visual system drew on symbolic design language representing unity, international friendship, and cross-cultural connection — threading a visual thread between Malaysian and Vietnamese identity without leaning too heavily on either. The result was a restrained, confident aesthetic that felt diplomatic in the truest sense: bridging, not competing.

Deliverables

  • Commemorative logo design
  • Diplomatic identity system
  • Event visual concept and art direction
  • Stage backdrop and LED visual design
  • Invitations and ceremonial presentation materials
  • Exhibition environment design
  • Digital communication assets and event collateral

The Moment

The opening ceremony was officiated by H.E. Dinh Ngoc Linh, Ambassador of Vietnam to Malaysia — a meaningful marker of the project’s reach and significance.
